52 Ancestors: Rodney Glen Barber #41

The theme for the forty-first week of the 52 Ancestors project was “Sports.” My immediate family was not very serious about competitive sports. I played softball and my brother played soccer for the YMCA. We learned to swim at young ages and that was about it.

My grandmother Joan (Avenell) played basketball in high school in the 1920’s, but unfortunately I inherited none of her skills. Nor do I have any photos from that period of her life. What I do have is a photo from my father’s time as a High School track star. He went to San Jacinto High School in Houston if I am reading their shirts correctly. He was a sprinter, though I don’t remember what races he ran. According to him, his track career was cut short by an injury of some type.
